Not all five stars shine. We’ve visited thousands to find the ones that truly do. Why Four Seasons Hotel Megeve?
Megève is one of those traditional mountain villages that have kept their charm through the ages…
It’s here that the Four Seasons Hotel Megève opened its door in 2017, joining forces with the illustrious Rothschild family who have called it home since 1920. Nearly a century ago, Noémie de Rothschild set out to create a winter resort as pretty as an Alpine postcard. She chose Megève, a modest farming town in 1920, for its gentle slopes and inviting setting in both summer and winter. The resort was built with a unique architecture of interconnecting chalets, then private residences for the Rothschild clan. Fast forward to today and not much has changed about the traditional, old-school feel of the resort. Straight off the slopes, fragrant saucepans of bubbling vin chaud greet you at the door, and inside, dark oil paintings, wooden beams and Persian rugs recall the megèvan style pioneered by the hotel’s original architect Henry Jacques Le Même. Under the Four Seasons umbrella, the hotel was revamped by designer Pierre-Yves Rochon to include ethnic pieces from the travels and artworks of the Rothschild family. Befitting the setting, the hotel’s 55 rooms are true mountain retreats, with quirky animal portraits, impressionist paintings and furniture covered in fake-fur throws and leather cushions. Another area where the hotel is a true showcase of French character and Alpine tradition are the restaurants and bars. Le 1920, with its vaulted, wooden ceiling and outdoor terrace is all about traditional French cuisine. Bar Edmond is a place for fine wines and creative cocktails served in a chalet-style setting. The hotel is also home to a wine cellar, a cigar room and a lobby lounge with an inviting atmosphere for a casual coffee or an après-ski cocoa. For a different kind of downtime, the spa by La Prairie is the place for a satisfying deep-tissue massage after a day skiing or a dip in the hotel’s indoor-outdoor heated pool.
