The rooms and common areas are adorned in bronze, Italian marble and wood in an Art Deco style with lashings of Italian and Chinese charm, but look more closely and you’ll find there is a lot more happening at this Bvlgari outpost than its sleek decor. Yes, the acres of black granite flooring, and the custom chandeliers and black and white portraits by Italian artist Irene Kung are impressive, but the real star here is how the hotel has been designed to give a different perspective on the city it calls from. Windows are shrouded by trees and shrubbery, and just beyond, views of the nearby Liangma River make for a soothing vista. Then there is the hotel’s private garden, which is that oasis of calm you would not expect to find in the heart of the Chinese capital. It’s like Bvlgari brought a slice of la dolce vita to Beijing’s embassy district, and it feels good to be here, among the Chinese pines and peach trees. In the evening, it’s where the city’s upper crust stops by for aperitivo, while elsewhere, the hotel’s main restaurant offers an outdoor terrace with views as perfect as chef Niko Romito’s lasagna, which we suggest you pair with a knockout negroni from the Il Bar.
